EARLY COLLEGE NEWS 

Registration for 2010-11  
Freshman registration was held during Bridge Week, July 20 - 22.  Schedules will be mailed in the middle of August.
Sophomore registration materials will be mailed to homes the middle of August.  The student's schedule will be included.  Parents must provide proof of residency which may be a copy of any utility bill - water, electricity, phone, a copy of a lease agreement, tax notice, or mortgage agreement.  A $10 registration fee covers the cost of the student agenda and postage for newsletters and report cards.  Registration materials may be mailed in or brought to the school.
Junior and senior registration is completed through the base high schools.  Students should follow directions at their individual high schools.  Student information forms will be mailed from ECH to provide us with any updated contact information.  These along with the students' schedules will be mailed in the middle of August.  Students may check their college schedules through their WaveNet accounts.  Students must not drop and add college courses through WaveNet as your college and high school schedules must match.  

Senior Meeting for Students and Parents
All seniors and their parents must attend a mandatory meeting on Wednesday, August 18, from 6:00 – 7:30 pm.  Items covered will be dual enrollment courses, scholarships, senior AVID, and review and signing a Senior Commitment form.

University Blvd. Closed for Summer
Due to road construction, University Blvd. is closed from Hwy. 501 to the HGTC entrance.  Visitors should use Singleton Ridge Rd. from both Hwy. 501 and Hwy. 544. Turn onto Technology Blvd. to enter HGTC from the eastern side of campus.  Technology Blvd. continues around to University Blvd.

ECH Celebrates Its Inaugural Graduates
On Tuesday evening, May 18, 101 ECH Seniors celebrated their final year at ECH.  Almost all of the graduates plan to continue on with their college educations.  A few plan to enter the military, and a few are planning to right to work in their career fields.  Video from the ceremony can be purchased for $35 from BE2. Graduates27 ECH Students Participate in HGTC Commencement Exercise    
The 2010 graduating class from ECH had 56 seniors eligible to participate in the HGTC Commencement Exercise.  Students earned either an Associates degree or a General Studies certificate. The ECH Class of 2010 have distinguished themselves through their scholarship and service.  They will graduate from their base high schools on either June 3 or June 4. Participating in the commencement exercises on Thursday, May 13, at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center were Benjamin Boylston, Mary Canfield, Callie Cannon, Venessa Cross, Tim Ferris, Matthew Fox, Catherine Griffin, Ashley Jones, Cody Keith, Felecia Kersey, Megan Lambrecht, Jessie Leonard, Tina MacBay, Lucas McCarthy, Mario Michaca, Brittany Montgomery, Summer Moree, Morgan Nordman, Melissa Reidy, Rebecca Rhodes, Amber Simmons, Hannah Snowden, Kimberly Stone, Mary Katelyn Stroud, David Thomas, Natasha Vereen, and Catherine Webster. 

HGTC Spring Semester Ends
ECH students begin Gap Time seminars the week of May 10.  HGTC faculty will offer special seminars that assist students with preparation for taking SAT/ACT, COMPASS Math, and COMPASS Writing along with other career/major-specific seminars.  Schedules are available from 1st block teachers.

Freshmen Tour College of Charleston & The Citadel
Students learned about two SC universities on Friday, April 23.  After a morning tour and information session at the College of Charleston, ECH students learned about The Citadel and how it differs from other traditional universities.

ECH Sophomores Tour University of South Carolina & SC Statehouse
SophomoresOn Friday, March 19, ECH sophomores traveled to Columbia.  In the morning, students visited USC.  At a session with an admission counselor, students learned they need an SAT of at least 1100 or ACT of 24-28 along with a 3.5 GPA or higher.  Admissions also looks for participation in extracurricular activities, service projects, and part- time work.  Students also took a walking tour of the campus.  After lunch on the SC Statehouse grounds, students learned about the history of the Statehouse and had an opportunity to tour both the Senate and House chambers.

HGTC and HCS Early College Recognized Nationally for Service
HonorHGTC/HCS Early College have been named to the 2009 President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll with Distinction by the Corporation for National and community Service.  Honorees are chosen based on a series of selection factors including scope and innovation of service projects, percentage of student participation in service activities, incentives for service, and the extent to which the school offers academic service-learning courses.  ECH students were engaged in many service projects to the school and community during 2008-09 school year.

ECH Teacher and Students Participate in Dancing with the Horry County Stars
Stars
Ms. Jamie Richard, ECH teacher, and her partner Robert Rogers danced the Foxtrot in competition in the annual BE2 K-12 Education Foundation fundraiser.  ECH students Thad Doughty, Rochelle Babb, Joey Petrone, Shannon Pesato. Laura Gilbert, Rodrigo, Martinez, Sammy Bosque, Reanne Wolff, Ryan Elko, and Bianca Forte performed the Tango during intermission. The students were coached by ECH teacher Tammi Lee.  

  

 Mary Marlowe Named ECH 2009-10 Teacher of the Year
MMCongratulations to Mrs. Marlowe!  Mrs. Marlowe was chosen by teachers, students, and parents to served as the ECH Teacher of the Year.  She teaches English I and Modern Literature.  A graduate of Coastal Carolina University, Mrs. Marlowe has been teaching for sixteen years.  In her fourth year at ECH, she also serves as the English Language Arts Department Chair and assists in such school-wide celebrations /committees as Read Across America and Red Ribbon weeks.
